Mapping global platinum supply chain and assessing potential supply risks

Platinum is widely considered as a critical mineral. According to the most optimistic scenario, demand for platinum could increase 240-fold globally by 2050 due enormous potential green hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles. By integrating network analysis evaluation indicators, this study develops framework visualize global upstream supply chain, pinpoint supply-related risk areas, assess position of various nations in chain. We conclude that there significant disruption Following summary main conclusions: First, primary product trade are both relatively sparse, with poor connectivity, overall network’s risk-resistance weak. Second, at non-geographical production country level, mining countries, countries producing companies, shareholders companies all highly concentrated. Third, markets significantly divided, South Africa holds stronger national than any other nation, except level companies’ shareholders. However, role not strong consuming transit countries. The proposes can reduce risks increasing domestic mine production, building international large-scale integrated corporations, raising share investing overseas mines.
